Abstract : The Kolmogorov concept of nwidth of classes of functions which is based on optimal approximating ndimensional subspaces is modified to include optimal nflats. As a special case, splines appear as optimal 0flats. Applications include the H superscript mextension problem for functions of a real variable. (Author)
