Abstract : The relative abilities of chemically defined media to support growth of ruminal Isotricha spp. have been compared on the basis of electronic counts of population densities after 24 or 48 hours incubation at 38C. Statistical analysis of the data indicated that these protozoa do not require, under these conditions, 16 of the initial 61 nutrilites of chemically defined medium 4A used in this study; these non-essential components include butyric, propionic anc valeric acids, glucose, fructose, maltose, sucrose, biotin, folic acid, menadione, niacin, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine, riboflavin, thiamin, para-aminobenzoic acid, thioctic acid, vitamin A, vitamin D 2, and vitamin B 12.
