Abstract : The gas phase photochemical formation of 1,5-C2B3H5, 1,2-C2B4H6, and 1,6-C2B4H6 from C2B4H8 was investigated. Light energy at about 2200A is absorbed directly by the carborane, rather than by way of photosensitization by mercury atoms. Photolysis in the presence of added gases such as O2 and C2H4 gives essentially the same yield and distribution of products implying that free radicals and BH3 are not involved in the product formation. The ultraviolet spectra of B5H11, B6H10, CH3CB5H8, C2B4H8, and (CH3)2C2B4H6 were recorded and compared. Some of the physical properties of 1,2-C2B4H6 were measured and summarized. The vapor pressure measurements indicate that the normal boiling point is 39.1C and the observed melting point is -25.4 to -24.4C. (Author)
