Abstract : The present investigation is concerned with the swirling inlet flow in a cylindrical tube and the heat transfer in the entrance region. This is a chosen model problem for the Gortler-type vortices which occur in boundary layer flow in order to gain more insight in the mechanism of vortices with their axes in the streamwise directions. Conclusions are being drawn on the final breakdown of the Gortler-type vortex system and the dependence on the Reynolds' number and the Prandtl number of the increase in heat transfer rates is brought out. The findings suggest that the vortex motion alone is not responsible for the large increases in heat transfer rates which have been observed. The induced motion which is created by such vortices in boundary layers is suggested as the possible mechanism responsible. (Author)
