Abstract : This study deals with an analysis of the guiding and plane wave scattering of electromagnetic fields by planar corrugated structures. Attention is focused primarily on the multi-mode aspects of the problem in order that the guiding properties in the leaky (complex) wave region and the scattering behavior associated with Wood anomalies of the S and P polarization (i.e., TM and TE modes) may be examined. The major portion of this work is devoted to the uniform planar corrugated structure, for which the TM and TE polarizations are analyzed in detail. Explicit expressions for the dispersion relation and reflection coefficients--valid for the various multi-mode cases considered (viz. up to two propagating modes in each of the air and plate regions)--are derived for the above polarizations. Numerical solutions of the propagation characteristics and reflection coefficients are presented for each case considered. Analytic solutions for the more general N-depth corrugated structure (i.e., one which contains N arbitrary corrugation depths in a single period) are obtained, also. (Author)
