Abstract : The physical and mechanical characteristics of neoprene film, a commonly used expandable-type balloon skin material, are presented for the purpose of developing constitutive equations that can be used in balloon analyses. 'Day' balloon film is found to be an almost perfectly elastic material through an extremely large range of deformations. A survey of previously proposed elastic constitutive equations for rubber-like materials is presented and all are found to be inadequate for neoprene. Consequently, a new constitutive relation based on the attempts of previous investigators and experiments performed by the author is proposed. It is shown to be a generalization of most earlier theories. (Author)
