Abstract : The energy loss of a charged particle moving at a constant velocity and passing normally through the boundary between two dielectric media is calculated. Attention is focused on the effects of the boundary and it is shown that the boundary creates two new mechanisms for losing energy. These are transition radiation and surface plasma oscillations. In addition, there are boundary corrections to the losses that are suffered by the particle in passing through the bulk material which are only important if the path length in the medium is of the order of the wavelength associated with the energy loss. The initiation of the emission of Cerenkov radiation as the particle first enters a medium is also studied in detail. (Author)
