Abstract : Neutron and gamma-ray streaming through a thin-steel, two-legged ducted entranceway was studied, and the dose rate at different positions in the duct was measured and calculated by several different techniques. The results were used to determine the protection afforded by a duct of this type, and they were compared to similar results obtained from ducts having thick steel or concrete walls. The albedo calculations were found to be in good agreement with the Monte Carlo calculations and the experimental measurements. It was also found that concrete ducts provide slightly greater attenuation of radiation than do steel ducts. Simplified formulas were developed to provide crude approximations to the solution of an optimum duct design. (Author)
