Abstract : The usual method of dealing with frequently encountered computational problems is to write a large special-purpose program. Generally it turns out that flexibility is achieved at the expense of considerable clerical work being required by every user and, further, that there is never quite enough flexibility, so that continual reprogramming is necessary. Suggested and discussed is the use of precompilers, which, in effect, create a special-purpose program for each particular task. Experience has shown that even users not too familiar with FORTRAN can make efficient use of such precompilers to generate special-purpose programs of their own. (Author)
