Abstract : The limiting factors for area search for side-looking sonar systems are discussed. Beam patterns for both unfocused and focused high resolution transducers are presented. A dynamic focusing process where the effective aperture of the array is varied proportional to the focused range is shown to provide a significant increase in search rate for high resolution side-looking sonar systems.
