Abstract : This report covers the development of a mathematical model for describing the approximate response of a fixed, ocean-based structure to a shock wave. The equation of motion for the structure during the diffraction phase is established on the basis of an approximation to the velocity potential of the fluid. Numerical calculations for a neutrally buoyant structure are presented and indicate that for the degree of restraint considered the response in the diffraction phase will be similar to that of a free cylinder. To study the response after flow around the structure has developed fully, the applied force was taken to be a function of velocity drag and fluid inertia. The equation of motion is presented, and is to provide the basis for planning model experiments. (Author)
