Abstract : A graphical method is described that is generally useful for solving a pair of simultaneous Boolean equations, particularly the system application equation and memory characteristic equation for determining the memory element flip-flop input equations. The decision mechanism utilized for determining the Karnaugh map structure from which an optimum solution may be obtained is based totally on the behavioral characteristics of the memory element as derived from a truth table. Simple illustrative examples are included for the R-S flip-flop (with variations in dominance), the J-K flip-flop and the R-S-T flip-flop encompassing various classes of 'don't care' conditions.
