Abstract : The electromagnetic compatability branch of the U. S. Army electronic laboratories has settled on a single conceptual framework for the study of electromagnetic compatibility problems and the prediction of interference in large radio communication systems. The framework is called the statistical terrain method of predicting interference. It is based on computer calculations of probabilities of three mutually-exclusive behavior states for every operative radio receiver in a system under study. The probability calculations depend upon the signal environment of the receivers, the receiver operating characteristics, and certain statistical propagation loss models. This report contains an expository mathematical description of the statistical terrain method and an explanation of the computer implementation of the method.
