Abstract : The work is divided into two parts. The first part deals with experimental work on the study of the influence of inorganic impurity, specimen size and heating rate on the thermal decomposition of macroscopic cellulosic fuel cylinders. The second part describes an experiment designed and built to study the chemical kinetics of cracking reactions along with the formulation of a comprehensive theory to predict the influence of secondary physico-chemical factors such as properties, convection, diffusion, cracking, etc. on the net burning rate of cellulosic fuels.
