Abstract : The first volume of an Atlas displays the daily curves of ionospheric electron content obtained from observations of the Faraday rotation of lunar radio echoes. Plane-polarized c-w radio signals at 150.6 Mc were beamed at the moon from the Evans area of Ft. Monmouth, N. J., and received and evaluated by the University of Illinois. Because of an angular ambiquity in the data taken on the one frequency, only variations of electron content relative to an arbitrary level were measured from July 1961 through June 1964. Thereafter, use of a second transmitted frequency of 413.25 Mc permitted resolution of the ambiquity, and absolute values were obtained. The introduction to Volume 1 of the Atlas outlines the theory on which the method is based and describes the receiving equipment and the method of presentation of the data. (Author)
