Abstract : Laminar flow over the surface of a material that ablates by sublimination is considered. Teflon and Celcon or Delrin are representative of this class of ablators. The coupling between the ablation process and the boundary layer is discussed, and the governing equations and boundary conditions are presented for a multicomponent, reacting mixture of ablated gases and the constituents of air. The multistrip integral method of solving the equations is developed in detail. The results of representative calculations for ablating Teflon cones and Celcon or Delrin cones at hypersonic conditions will also be given later. (Author)
