Abstract : This report describes research performed under Contract AF 49(638)-1708. Included were investigations of the turbulent structure of the D and lower E regions of the ionosphere utilizing electron density-height-time variations obtained with the Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory backscatter sounder. Associated with this is the attempted determination of horizontal and vertical wave motions, the height of the turbopause and, if possible, the driving mechanisms and sources. This research was one of related efforts underway in the Ionosphere Research Laboratory during the period of interest. A brief history of past work in the Laboratory in this field is included. The problems dealt with and the conclusions drawn are described. It is pointed out that several new and important results have been obtained; due in great part to the rather ideal characteristics of the Arecibo facility - especially in comparison with other available experimental techniques or systems. These results include a rather complete description of the turbopause and its height, distinguishing between random dispersive waves and turbulent motions, below the turbopause, and the sources of the waves. A listing of reports, paper publications and presentations are included as well as a personnel listing, both staff and graduate students. (Author)
