Abstract : A theoretical treatment of the properties of the barium oxide molecular beam tube in terms of its frequency precision is presented. Numerical results for a given beam tube design are derived. The influence of magnetic and electric fields, the Doppler effect, cavity pulling, and the exciting R. F. spectrum are discussed. The results are summarized by stating the requirements for a frequency accuracy of better than 10 to the -12th power with respect to the natural molecular transition frequency. Such a beam tube seems feasible and capable of operating unshielded in magnetic environments of several hundred Gauss. (Author)
