Abstract : The relationship between the maximum surface wind gusts and the maximum wind speed in the lowest 10,000 feet is used to develop an objective technique to forecast surface wind gusts equal to or exceeding 20 knots at Mactan Air Base. Considering only the days when gusty surface winds are likely, the dependent sample shows 73% correct forecasts and a Heidke skill score of 0.46. The corresponding figures for the independent data are 69% and 0.39. (Author)
