Abstract : The viscoelastic effect of ionic linkages in carboxylic rubber is indicative of the presence of hard ionic clusters dispersed throughout an amorphous rubbery matrix. The viscoelastic response characteristics of the metallocarboxylate rubbers are similar to those observed with linear segmented elastomers -- an enhanced and extended 'rubbery plateau' region above a major glass transition temperature. The high strength of the carboxylic rubbers cured with metal oxides is ascribed to the presence of ionic clusters which give rise to a two-phase, reinforced structure. (Author)
