Abstract : In the neighbourhood of Askabad the following species of Ixodidae were found in a free state: Hyalomma detritum P. Sch. - a hungry female; H. dromedarii Koch. (= jakimovi Ol.) - a hungry female and a male; H. plumbeum Panz. (marginatum Koch) - 3 males and a hungry female; H. asiaticum P. Sch. and E. Schl. - many times both crawling over the ground and inside the burrows of Spermophylopsis leptodactylus Licht., Rhombomys opimus Licat., Meriones tamaricinus Pall., Pallasiomys erythrurus Gray, and P. meridianus Pall. and Hemiechinus sp. It is supposed that the development cycle of Hyalomma asiaticum takes place within the burrows of the animals, when this tick exists under desert and semi-desert conditions. In these burrows it finds protection and microclimatic conditions favouring its existence and feeds upon their hosts in its larval and nymphal stages. (Author)
