Abstract : The duration of preoviposition period in Ixodes ricinus at different temperatures and its dependence upon the dates of the engorgement were investigated for the ticks from Leningrad population. Characteristic changes in the reaction of engorged females to high temperatures took place depending on the dates of the engorgement. The ovogenesis was inhibited at 25-30C in the females of the middle-summer engorgement (July-August). Some ticks failed to oviposit and others showed a delay. Such an effect was absent in the females engorged both at the beginning and the end of a tick season (June and September respectively). At low (8-10C) and moderate temperatures (16-18C) the preoviposition period did not depend on the dates. The temperature is supposed to influence upon the period not directly, but through the water elations of engorged females, the water relations being different during various parts of the season.
