Abstract : A process has been developed for refining the austenite grain size of a martensitic stainless steel, AFC 77, by deformation in the tempered martensitic condition. Deformation above 25% results in considerable grain refinement during subsequent austenitizing. Increases in yield strength of 20 to 60 ksi have been obtained with no loss of toughness. For tempering treatments at 500F and 700F both strength and toughness are increased. (Author)
