Abstract : The simple stochastic model of interface temperature transients of solids in sliding contact has been extended. An experimental investigation has been carried out which gave credence to the simple model. The model led to the observation that, statistically, the standard deviation of the interface transients may be an order of magnitude higher than the average interface temperature. It is suggested that it is the standard deviation which dictates the level of chemical activities at the interface. (Author)
