Abstract : Estimates of cardiac output per minute were obtained from electrical impedance plethysmograph records from 53 unselected heart patients for comparison with corresponding measured values from indicator dilution curves and by the Fick procedure. The data were generally divided, representing two groups of patients. One group had estimated values correlating directly with measured values; the estimates of the other group were low by a factor of about 2. When estimated values from patients with mitral valve lesions were first multiplied by 2, average estimates of all patients with either mitral or aortic valve disease correlated with measured values for 71% of the patients. An identifying feature of the impedance waveform was found characteristic, of the two groups of patients. By use of a factor of 2 based on this characteristic, the estimated values of cardiac output of 68% of all examined patients correlated with measured values. When data from patients with questionable plethysmograph records were omitted, these percentages increased to 80% and 78%, respectively. Direction of the change of cardiac output between corresponding estimated and measured values compared for 85% of the data. (Author)
