Abstract : The basic mechanisms of solid state bonding of titanium alloys were being investigated using the alloy Ti-6Al-4V as a reference. Progress during the sixth quarter included the following: (1) Shear tests and metallography where completed on six specimens bonded during the previous quarter. (2) A series of ultrasonic scan were made of the above six samples. The ultrasonic data was found to correlate well with the shear tests and metallographic examination. (3) Seven shear test samples were bonded under a variety of conditions to obtain additional information on the effects of finish and bonding time. (4) One 3/4 inch diameter by 3 inches long tensile specimen was bonded. The results of this experiment indicated a need to modify the bonding dies to eliminate radial constraint. (5) Shear test data from previous measurements has been fitted to a third order polynomial by means of a least squares program. (6) Data has been found in the literature on diffusion of fifteen elements in titanium including aluminum, vanadium, titanium, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon. (Author)
