Abstract : The results of an investigation of gas discharge with an incandescent cathode in an equipotential volume in magnetic field with intensity up to 2000 oe are given. In the investigated range of pressures, from 0.000002 to 0.0001 mm Hg, a plasma column will be formed which is negatively charged relative to the surrounding walls. It is established that such a discharge becomes unstable with an increase in the pressure of the neutral gas. There was formed a plasma jet, steadily revolving to the electron side, which breaks away from the region of the primary beam. The appearance of the jet is the result of polarization of plasma in the beam of primary electrons in the presence of azimuthal heterogeneity in density and distinction in the drift speeds of ions and electrons. With a further increase in pressure steady-state rotation vanishes and intense oscillations with continuous spectrum of frequencies are developed in the discharge. An explanation of the basic regularities of behavior of discharge is given. On the basis of a simplified model an expression for the frequency of rotation of the jet is obtained; it is qualitatively confirmed by an experiment. (Author)
