Abstract : The problem of estimating the variance of net demand as opposed to total demand arises in connection with replacement demands: items demanded to replace those which are no longer serviceable, but which in many cases can eventually be repaired. A new formula is derived for estimating the variance of net demand. Underlying the derivation was an explicit consideration of the dynamics of the repair process. (Author)
