Abstract : Evidence is presented indicating that the time of appearance of the giant chromosomal puffs in the salivary glands concides with a change in RNA metabolism in these organs. Before the development of the puffs, an intense synthesis of ribosomal RNA is noted. Afterwards only the synthesis of polydisperse and soluble RNA is observed. The data indicate that ribosomal RNA synthesis in this organism follows the same scheme that has been proposed for similar insect systems and for HeLa cells. Non-ribosomal rapidly labelled RNA sedimentation in the 10-16S areas of the gradient can be detected in the various periods of development. (Author)
