Abstract : An investigation of the variables of primary importance in controlling longitudinal wave velocities for a kaolinite has been carried out. A relationship has been established between void ratio, consolidation pressure, and longitudinal wave velocity, such that specifying any two will determine the third. Although relationships have been found for the kaolinite tested, it is not axiomatic that they will be consistent for other soils. Particle orientation, which affects void ratio and stress transfer between minerals, seems to be an extremely important variable in governing longitudinal wave velocity. (Author)
