Abstract : Messenger RNA synthesis can take place during amino acid starvation and is thus not regulated by the stringent control. Transfer RNA and ribosomal RNA are coordinately controlled by the stringent control. Transfer RNA and ribosomal RNA vary independently according to growth medium, showing that the stringent control is not involved in this aspect of the RNA regulation. The ratio of rate of protein synthesis versus ribosomal RNA content is not constant with growth rate. End product repression acts both at the transcriptional level and at the translational level.
