Abstract : This report describes the active reflector optimization study which was conducted to determine the feasibility of increasing the scattering cross-section of antenna elements in the 0.2 - 10 GHz frequency range by terminating the antenna with a stable, negative-resistance, reflection-type amplifier. Analytical and experimental investigations showed that stable antenna-tunnel diode amplifier active reflectors are realizable in the VHF, UHF and microwave frequencies. It has been pointed out that the low output power of tunnel diodes is the main limitation of this type of active reflectors. By replacing the tunnel diode amplifier with an avalanche diode amplifier the output power was increased from the microwatts to the milliwatts level, providing an improvement of 30 db over the tunnel diode circuit.
