Abstract : Some authors assume that in the territory of the Eastern Ciscaucasus there is a correspondence of the gravity field with the nature of the surface of the Paleozoic folded base. Such an assumption has been confirmed by the results of recent geophysical investigations carried out by various organizations. However, more complicated geologic-geophysical conditions are observed to the south of the latitudinal course of the Kuma River, where the mentioned correspondence is absent. According to the point of view expressed in the paper, the presence of the dense complex of rocks in the lower part of the sedimentary stratum is the most acceptable explanation of the nature of the gravity anomalies under observations. The gravity anomalies for two correlation method of refraction wave profiles were calculated from the Gamburtsev measuring grid. A good conformity of calculated and observed curves was obtained from the variations of the base density and the thickness of Permian-Triassic deposits. The following basic conclusions were drawn: (1) In the sections where the Permian-Triassic deposits can be assumed to be of sufficient thickness they considerably effect the qualitative nature of the gravitational field. (2) The nature of the gravity anomalies in the sections of base uplifts is determined by the topographic effect of the base surface and the unconsolidation of rocks which form this base. (Author)
