Abstract : Cable-guided winchdown, ready-launch and on-deck topping operations were evaluated in the UH-2A/B helicopter and found to be feasible. Flight test data for cable-guided winchdown and ready-launch operations compared favorably with analytical predictions for land-based operations. The established correlations were subsequently used to predict ship based winchdown characteristics. Aircraft cable guided ascents and retrievals were made in winds up to 50 knots without difficulty. Smooth and positive lift offs were made by holding cable tension between 600 and 1000 pounds. A cable tension of 1000-1500 pounds generally resulted in smoother retrievals due to the ability to maintain steady cable load and rate of descent. The rate of descent considered most comfortable from the pilot's standpoint was 150 ft./min. Static controllability was evaluated at cable angles up to 20 degrees longitudinally and laterally and at cable tensions from 500 to 2300 pounds. Control positions varied only 10 percent from trim for the various combinations of cable angles and cable tensions investigated, allowing ample control margins even at extreme conditions. The dynamic stability characteristics of the helicopter during winchdown operations are acceptable. (Author)
