Abstract : Contributions of mathematics to the field of artificial intelligence are considered. The theory of formal languages and automata is believed to have value, if only as an abstract theory that indicates directions for research and experimentation. However, broader relevance is postulated, since problems of automata theory, for example, are viewed as but one new instance of old mathematical problems. Two fields of study are examined that are considered to have particular relevance to artificial intelligence, namely, the combinatorial properties of strings and the analysis of the complexity of operations on strings.
