Abstract : A generalized Fourier expansion is employed to obtain a numerical interpretation of Saint-Venant's principle. The investigation is made for stress and displacement boundary conditions on an end-loaded semi-infinite elastic strip with a Poisson ratio of 1/3. Continuous and concentrated loads in both symmetric and antisymmetric configurations are considered. Saint-Venant's 'sufficiently far' distances are obtained for six specific cases and trends are noted. No attempt is made to study in detail the convergence of the series expansion. A comparison is made between the exact solution and the elementary beam theory solution of the deflection of a fixed-end beam in flexure. (Author)
