Abstract : Hollow electron beams find wide use in modern microwave tubes. The wave propagation on such beams, focused by finite magnetic fields, is studied under small-signal conditions. The dispersion relation for slow waves is derived, and numerical solutions are presented in graphical form. Two types of axisymmetric modes can exist on a hollow beam, which are called space-charge and vortex modes. The radial propagation constant and the plasma frequency reduction factor are shown for a number of typical cases. A brillouin diagram is given for a beam of perveance 5 microperv. Comparison is made with results of earlier publications which use the finite field approximation. (Author)
