Abstract : The special case of gravitational radiation is singled out with the aid of the requirement that no field sources exist inside the space-time region in question. The role of field equations is played by the Bianchi identities, which assume in the weak-field approximation on a form analogous to the Maxwell equations for the electromagnetic field in vacuum. The author proposes to regard this analogy as the starting point when studying the nature of gravitational radiation.
