Abstract : The effect of sodium oxide on the refining capacity of the slags of the CaF2-Al2O3-Na2O system used in electroslag melting has been investigated. It was found that increasing the sodium-oxide content reduces the viscosity and surface tension of slags. As a result, it stimulates the diffusion of silicon, aluminum, and magnesium oxides and lowers the content of nonmetallic inclusions in metal. Sodium oxide added to the slag in the amount of 6% lowers the surface tension of slag at 1600C from 425 to 370 erg/sq. cm. In addition, sodium oxide is a strong desulfurizer. (Author)
