Abstract : The investigation was made primarily to improve understanding of the shortcomings of ground based flight simulators. The resolution of displayed signals in such simulators is generally not as good as in real flight and may adversely affect the simulation. To verify this hypothesis, the effects on closed loop stability of a dead-space in bank and heading feedback are studied, both for autopilot and piloted control. It is shown that low frequency limit cycles result, the amplitudes of which are proportional to the size of dead-space. Since threshold effects of this type are not confined to the simulator (the pilot himself has visual thresholds) the results obtained are of wide significance. (Author)
