Abstract : In the term 'technical editor,' 'technical' means something different for virtually every individual and every job, but 'editor' provides common ground across jobs and disciplines. As a basis for considering how a technical editor can contribute to his own professional development, the paper discusses skills, attitudes, and activities that characterize the professional editor, taking into account the special problems faced by the editor who works with technical subject matter.
