Abstract : The convective turbulence and diffusion in the upper atmosphere were calculated from radiometrically-calibrated photographs of luminous tracer chemicals released from rockets. Diffusion coefficients were found by the standard method of measuring the Gaussian width of the glowing cloud. The turbulent flow was characterized by the shape of the logarithmic plot of spectral power density of surface brightness against spatial wave number; this new measurement required the development of a digital computer program for calculating the autocorrelation and spatial frequency spectra from microdensitometrically-sampled photographic radiance data. Results to date are promising in that they correlate well with other measurements of turbulence parameters. (Author)
