Abstract : The average solid surface free energy of molybdenum has been measured using the Udin zero creep method at 2500C under 1 atmosphere of tantalum-gettered argon. Grain boundary grooving has been studied in chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten under a variety of conditions using high vacuum techniques and tantalum-gettered argon. Surface free energy and surface self-diffusion of molybdenum were studied in the temperature range 1600-2400C using pressure-sintered bicrystals. The average solid-surface free energy of chromium of various interstitial contents, molybdenum, Mo-0.5Ti, and tungsten were measured by the multiphase equilibria technique utilizing interferometry and found to be 15-50 percent lower than the corresponding liquid surface tensions.
