Abstract : In most computations, it is tacitly assumed that the results produced by the program are 'accurate enough'. This assumption is not always valid. In this report, we discuss several possible sources of error in digital computation, and we list several steps which can be taken to guard against some types of error and determine an upper bound for the effects of other types. We illustrate these techniques with our experience in writing a program to locate zeros of the Riemann zeta function. (Author)
