Abstract : The object of this note is to clarify the discussion concerning diffusion of point defects in a stress field. There are two effects; one (the Einstein term) is associated with changes in the equilbrium defect energy with position; another (the barrier term) results because stress fields can alter the height of the activation barrier. Both effects are important. (Author)
