Abstract : Methods are presented for the statical analysis of elastic suspension systems that include extensional springs with linear characteristics. The elastic properties of such a suspension are formulated in terms of a matrix of stiffness coefficients. Formulae for these coefficients are derived for an arbitrary three-dimensional arrangement of springs, and also for various special configurations possessing one, two, or three special planes or axes, called principal elastic planes or axes. Some misconceptions arising from a mistaken analogy between systems of masses and systems of springs are clarified. It is shown that the latter possess principal planes or axes only in special cases, including cases of plane or axial symmetry. These special cases are discussed in detail. Application of the method is illustrated by two numerical examples. (Author)
