Abstract : The objective of the project is to advance the state-of-the-art of Large-Area Electronic Display by developing a new high resolution electron beam deformation system for thermoplastic film and a novel optical projection system. An integrated display model of the Large-Area Electronic Display Panel was built and demonstrated at three formal demonstration sessions. This integrated display model employs a high resolution, magnetic deflection electron gun, developed specifically for this type of application. Use of a TIRP optical system permits optical projection from the writing station with the electron gun mounted normal to the record. This configuration also permits an overwrite capability where the electron gun may write a number of records in sequence over a period of time. Choice of thermoplastic as the recording and display medium gives image storage with a useful viewing time, in the present system, from several minutes up to one-half hour, depending upon the thermoplastic temperature. A specifically designed 70 mm shearing-oil tape transport, consistent with the internal reflection optical system, provides the fast tape pull required to hold the record up-date time approximately one second. The TIRP optical system, employs a lenticular condensing system to uniformly illuminate the 50 x 50 mm thermoplastic record on the TIRP prism. A TIRP projection system projects the strongly immersed record on the TIRP prism to an 8 x 8 foot screen at a 20 foot throw by employing a transfer lens, fiber prism, projection lens and focus lens. With a 4 kw xenon arc-lamp, this system could deliver approximately 4,000 lumens to the screen. (Author)
