Abstract : Utilization of an airborne laboratory for conducting experimental studies of the Earth's ionosphere is described. The equipment employed in the aircraft includes a Granger Path Sounder ionosonde, radio receivers for oblique-incidence observations in the HF, MF and VLF frequency bands, optical equipment for studying upper atmosphere emissions and a system for recording pulse amplitudes in digital form. Results of experimental studies utilizing this equipment are reported. The studies include: solar eclipse effects on the ionosphere; the effects of precipitating Van Allen belt electrons on the ionosphere in the vicinity of the South Atlantic magnetic anomaly and its northern conjugate region; effects of D-region absorption on vertical- and oblique-incidence radio signals; and ionospheric F-region anomalies.
