Abstract : The indentation microhardness method was used for the investigation of the anisotropy of mech. properties on the faces A(111) and B(-1-1-1). Furthermore, the hardness anisotropy of GaP crystals was studied by the process of surface scratching. The anisotropy of mechanical properties on the faces was considered in view of the shape of the scratches that were made in 15 deg. steps in various directions within a range of 0--360 deg. The shape of scratches changed with the change in their directions. The scratches of the same shape repeated every 120 deg., which corresponded to the symmetry of the given face. Etching the imprints on the face A(111) revealed the etch figures, giving evidence of the polarity of mechanical properties of that face. The same effect could be seen from etch figures of the scratches leading to various directions. GaP possesses a very interesting peculiarity in that no dislocation zones are formed around the scratches. This phenomenon ties in with the covalent character of the bond in this compound. (Author)
