Abstract : The article represents an interview given on new technological materials studied by scientists and on prospects for the future. The past progress made in the research and development of light-weight and heat-resistant materials is mentioned. The role played by new materials in development of miniaturization in electronics and cybernetics is stressed. The nature of the atomic bands is studied in order to obtain high-strength materials. The properties of permanent magnet materials as well as of soft iron for a-c instruments are investigated. Alloys of a high superconductivity are also studied and small-sized powerful electromagnets are used with almost no consumption of current at helium temperatures of 4.2 K and lower. In connection with synthetic diamonds and abrasive materials, the studies of special crystals for boring and drilling tools are conducted by the Institute. A new method of hydraulic extrusion of metal is briefly described. (Author)
